Background & Context

Goldman Plumbing Services delivered the construction and licensed medical-gas installation of a complete new central medical air plant at Westmead Hospital, as principal contractor on a design-and-construct contract. Goldman built the plantroom, installed the medical air compressors and oxygen-cleaned pipework, completed the electrical and structural works, and commissioned the plant with medical-air purity certification.

The Engineering Challenge

Scope of works included: Plantroom construction (structural steel, precast, screw piling, roofing), including asbestos removal; Installation of four oil-free medical air compressors, dryers, filters and two 5,000 L receivers; Oxygen-cleaned / certified copper medical gas pipework, isolation and relief valves; Electrical, MCC, alarm and BMS installation; condensate pumping, ventilation, fire and ancillary services; Managed shutdown and temporary medical-air supply during cutover; Commissioning and medical-air purity certification to AS2896.

Structured Delivery Approach

Key systems and technologies: 4 × oil-free VSD medical air compressors (6 m³/min each), Atlas Copco; 2 × 5,000 L air receivers; desiccant dryers and filtration; Oxygen-cleaned copper medical gas pipework; medical air alarm panel; Schneider BMS; motor control centre; AS2896 compliance.

Final Handover & Results

A fully constructed and certified central medical air plant delivered in a live hospital environment with no loss of medical air supply during changeover, completing its defect-liability period with verified performance.
